We’ve all heard the phrase “It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know.” Most professionals will tell you they landed their current job thanks to their professional network. Rarely do I hear that someone got a job by applying online and was selected because of their skills and experience matched the job description.
Obtaining your dream job and connecting with other professionals in any career industry sometimes can be challenging. Networking is a necessity, but it doesn’t necessarily come naturally.
If you want to connect with professionals who work in your dream industry or if you’re looking to take your career to the next level, use the following networking tips to help you get started.
1. Clear Elevator Pitch
Having a clear elevator pitch is key when connecting with professionals. When attending a networking event, the elevator speech should be memorized and easy to recite. When connecting with professionals on LinkedIn, do not click the “connect” button too quickly! Send a message to the professional first. It should be short, include part of your elevator speech and a request to build a professional relationship with them.
2. Build a Relationship
In life, everyone goes through various struggles and journeys. We all have big dreams and goals that we want to accomplish. We can’t get to each step without the help, guidance, and support of others. When connecting with professionals, build a meaningful connection relationship with them as individuals. Having these types of relationships helps you and you never know what professional will make an impact on your life.
3. Follow Up
Always follow up with professionals that you meet an event! Whether networking in person or LinkedIn, you should follow up via email. It’s a perfect opportunity to initiate conversations about your interest and career path, get to know the professional, provide them with a little information about yourself, and even schedule an informational interview. Stay in touch!
