Welcome back to our “6 questions” series where we ask someone 6 career-centric questions about themselves.
This week we’re chatting with Meg Gegler, account executive at theSkimm. Gegler gives us a glimpse into her journey to theSkimm along with some of her favorite things about living in New York City.
What is your title & what do you do day-to-day?
I am an Account Executive on the “Cash Money” team at theSkimm, focused on our affiliate partnerships. Specifically, this means that I am finding new and exciting products and services to recommend to our audience that will help them live smarter, ensure their time is well spent, and bring them surprise and delight. I head up our affiliate team here at theSkimm, where I partner with brands such as Quip, Glossier and more to get in front of our audience. From prospecting, selling, and managing each account, I am working with over 50 brands each quarter, which certainly keeps me busy each day!
How did you get your current job?
I applied online! I originally applied for a position on the product team that seemed similar to what I was doing at my previous job. After speaking with the Head of Product, I learned that the position was not exactly what I was looking for, but I stayed in touch and continued to check in on theSkimm’s job site until I found this role, which felt like a great fit for me. I reached back out to my contact to be considered for the new role, and here I am.
Favorite coffee shops and lunch spots in NYC?
This is like asking me to choose my favorite child. If I’m near my apartment in the East Village, I love La Colombe for coffee, followed by Honey Brain for lunch. If I’m grabbing something by the office, I am usually at Maman or Ralph’s for coffee and Hu Kitchen for lunch. On the weekend when I have all the time in the world, my absolute favorite spots are Loring Place and Lafayette.
Who inspires you & why?
My parents will always be my number one inspiration—they both started from the bottom and worked their way up to where they are today. They teach me the value of patience every day, that going after what you want takes both hard work and time. On our podcast Skimm’d from The Couch, our co-founders Carly and Danielle ask guests who they would call first if they got good or bad news—for me, my parents are the first people to hear about anything in my life, the good, the bad and everything in between.
What is the hardest or most rewarding part of your job?
I genuinely love bringing new and exciting brands and products to our audience—while this is the most rewarding part of my job, it’s also the most challenging. Not everything resonates with everyone!
If someone is interested in working at theSkimm, what steps should they take?
Speaking from experience, apply online! My recommendation is to really look for the positions that speak to you—where you understand the day to day of the role and are both excited and willing to get your hands dirty. I can genuinely say that our team here evaluates every application, and the ones that stand out most are the ones where, in addition to being qualified for the job, you can feel the person’s personality and enthusiasm coming through.
