Starting a new job is such an exciting time. It’s an opportunity to develop new skills, build your network and take your career further. Although you were selected amongst all the applicants for this new role, the pressure to make a strong first impression and live up to your employer’s expectations is on. To help ease your worries, here are five tips to best prepare for your first day.
1. Do your research
Before starting a new job, you want to make sure you do some research about the company. Although you probably already did some research during the interview stage, it’s always good to brush up your knowledge and dust off those notes ahead of Day 1. Check out the company’s website and social media channels to learn about the following:
- What are the company’s values and objectives?
- What are the company’s goals and accomplishments?
- What are some interesting projects or products the company is developing?
- How does the company engage with its customers or clients?
2. Reach out to your employer
Make sure to send your employer a quick, friendly email stating how excited you are about this new opportunity, clarifying where and when the two of you will meet on the first day and lastly if there is anything you can read up on to prepare for the job. This shows your employer that you take initiative and are ready to roll up your sleeves and do the best you can to succeed.
3. Dress the part
Depending on your work environment, you might need to update your wardrobe. When I started my new job, I knew that I would need to stock up on some professional clothing items like pencil skirts, blazers and dress pants. As you prepare for your first day on the job, it’s always best to overdress than underdress. This is where doing research about the company comes in handy since you will be able to dress according to the company’s work culture. Pro tip: the professional clothing section of H&M is great for affordable and chic clothing.
4. Stay connected and informed
Depending on the position, your job may require that you know about current events, popular trends or the news cycle. Make sure to stay on top of your game and do the necessary research. Some things you can do are:
- Set up Google alerts for specific topics to get email notifications.
- Make it a habit to read up on the news/trends/events in the morning.
- Follow relevant podcasts, blogs, and social media channels.
5. Figure out your commute
Make sure to run through your commute ahead of time. Determine the fastest way for you to get to work on time and a backup route just in case. Also, practice getting ready. How long does it take you to prepare in the mornings? What time do you have to leave the house to make it on time? Being proactive like this will help you feel more comfortable and ready on your first day.
Bonus Tip!
I saved the most important tip for last and it is to stay calm and feel confident. Starting a new job comes with a slew of challenges, but remember, you were chosen for this role because you are exactly what the company is looking for. You have the skills and the know-how to make a meaningful contribution. Don’t underestimate yourself and just do the best you can with the information and resources at your disposal.
Good luck and you got this!
