Passion speaks louder than experience when interviewing for your dream marketing job. It’s about your eyes lighting up when you talk about a certain area of marketing. The ideas you have to grow and engage an audience. Understanding marketing terms and concepts are important but can be taught over time. The passion for the art of marketing comes from within. First things first, we have to get your foot in the door with your resume. Direct experience or not how can you show passion on a resume?
1. Volunteering
Choose a local non-profit organization that means something to you. Reach out and ask if you can volunteer in your favorite area of marketing to help them grow. This experience on your resume will have the hiring manager thinking “Hey, if she does this in her spare time, she must love marketing!”
2. Show Your Creativity!
On your resume, each point should display what you did and how you contributed in bringing an idea to life for a positive impact.
Creativity adjectives: Curated, Initiated, entrusted, and developed.
Positive outcome adjectives: Successfully, increased, resulted in, and executed
Example: Curated a monthly social calendar to better connect with our audience resulting in a 10% increase in customer engagement month over month.
You did it, interview scheduled and now it’s time to land your dream job! Here are the ways to talk the talk to be able to show your passion for marketing in the interview.

4. Conquering Interview Questions
Almost all interviews start with the infamous “tell me about yourself” This is your prime opportunity while you explain your marketing experience to sprinkle in why you love marketing! Here are some questions to ask yourself to work your answers into interview questions. I have provided my personal answers as real-life examples.
– Where did your passion start?
I went to West Virginia University and majored in Advertising, but I’ve been building websites and trying to be at the top of the search engine results since I was 13. When I built a fan site for the Backstreet Boys. *I literally landed a job because of this story! Later the CEO told me it was your Backstreet Boys story that did it!
– When was the first time you discovered marketing would be the right field for you?
I have always been fascinated by marketing, I loved watching the Super Bowl for the commercials and would talk to family and friends about which one they liked the best. – Always accessing customer behavior for engagement.
– Tell me about a time where you were under pressure to meet a deadline? When I was at Warner Brothers, I drafted a proposal to help launch a new Harry Potter focused Ecommerce shop. At first, I thought the proposal was only for my boss and soon found out it was for the author J.K. Rowling as well. The pressure was on! I succeeded by showcasing products the author and super fans would appreciate. One of the products sold out in days after we launched that previously saw low sales volume. One of my main goals is to always better understand the customers wants and needs.
Passion will take you further. Now that you’ve landed your marketing job it’s only up from here! It’s easier to move up in your career when you are doing something you love; it comes naturally, and it will accelerate your career goals. #bigmood
